Mentoring Program

If you're interested in participating as a mentor, please send a note to our gmail account.

Greenwich, Easton Community Cares is an organization that has begun meeting as a result of several tragic losses of our young community members over the years and the high use of drugs and alcohol among this group. During one of the meetings the subject was raised about establishing a mentoring program. The first step will be to gather a group of people who will be willing to become mentors. GECC (Greenwich, Easton Community Cares) and its members have taken on the task of establishing such a group.

The goal of this group is to create a healthy environment in a positive family and community that offers protection from risk behaviors. To fight neglect, low self esteem, loneliness and guide the student to become an active member of the community through job opportunities and/or volunteer service. This program may also aid in a career search for the student.

This letter invites you to consider becoming a mentor. We have explored programs that have worked in the past rather than re-invent the wheel. We will base this program on the current LIFTS program that is so popular with the younger members of the community during the summer. We are looking for people who have experience and/or interests in topics that will attract the older children. It would require two hours per week and you would become part of a team that takes responsibility for a child. Mentors spend time being adult friends to the youth. Mentors invest their time in listening, building trust, establishing a relationship, supporting and guiding the student.
GECC and its members will provide training to help and will work closely with you throughout the period of your mentoring. It will be important to have your input during this process.

We would greatly appreciate it if you would consider this most valuable contribution to the community and its youth. If you think you might be interested please join us Wed. Jan. 20th 7 PM at the Greenwich firehouse for a meeting...we hope to have students and parents join us. Attendance at this meeting will be for information and we do not expect a commitment from you at this time.

Sincerely,
Claudia Blackler, Matt Donnelly, David Doonan, Jennifer Holden, Keith Kelley, Cliff Oliver Mealy, Donna Passino, Hannie Varosy
