Notes from the January Meeting
The meeting opened at 7 PM present: Dave Doonan, Matt Donnelly, Cliff Oliver, Hannie Varosy, Claudia Blackler, Donna Passino, Jennifer Holden (with many others arriving during the meeting). Becky & Jeff Wright-Sedam and Emily Crawford attended in response to the mentoring letter. Other adult members of the community attended as well as teenagers. Also members of the Gannon Group were in attendance. The mentoring letter was read and the mission statement was read from the previous GECC group:
The Greenwich/Easton Community cares about the safety and welfare of all our youth. It is through this great love and concern and unwavering commitment to our most valuable asset, our child; that we refuse to tolerate any illegal use of drugs or alcohol. Collectively, our elected officials, clergy and ecumenical groups and school administration will work tirelessly to prevent the underage use of alcohol. However, policymakers cannot bring about this transition toward increased respect and responsibility alone. We are in great need of the efforts of our entire community especially parents. Although this group will lead by actions as well as words to encourage parents to properly perform their very difficult duties, be assured that strict enforcement of existing laws as they pertain to the illegal use and distribution of alcohol will be constant.
The group toured the basement room which will be converted into a teen community center. Some of the items the teens mentioned they would like: kereoke, x-box, snack bar, computers to name a few. It was also mentioned that a video game tournament could be held in the future. We are awaiting a report from a structural engineer who will determine what has to be done before this room can be decorated.
Dave mentioned that Hoosick Falls has a teen center and he will try to schedule a visit to check out how they run it.
Matt Donnelly who is also on the Gannon Fund Comm. said that since they are up and running with their inc. papers, etc. they would take the lead in writing grants.
At the end of the meeting we also took a tour of the upstairs room. This room is very large, has a stage and will be perfect for concerts, parties, bands, etc. It needs a great deal of work which will include an elevator. Dave Doonan is working on funds, etc. to accomplish this.
